Fish Lab Sandbox, Endless, and Zen

Fish Lab ships extra modes beyond the main short incremental path: Sandbox, Endless, and Zen. Zen can install as a real Windows screensaver. This guide explains when to use each mode and how they relate to the core collect-on-the-beat loop.

Why modes exist

The campaign-shaped experience teaches systems quickly: hover on the beat, process fish, climb the tech tree, write grants, allocate tool power. Modes let you stay in the fantasy after that lesson — or approach it from a calmer angle. They are not separate games with unique currencies; they reframe the same lab toys.

Sandbox

Sandbox is for intentional tinkering. Use it when you want to:

• Test tool power splits without campaign pressure
• Admire swarm rendering and lab growth at your own pace
• Try “what if I over-invest this branch?” experiments
• Capture screenshots or footage for friends

Sandbox still rewards good rhythm and processing hygiene. It simply removes some of the short-game urgency. Bring lessons back to Power Allocation and Upgrades Priority once you discover a broken-feeling combo.

Endless

Endless is the marathon lens. Expect longer sessions, denser late swarms, and optimization rabbit holes. It is the natural home for players who finish the short arc and still want “one more song” of shader fish.

Endless tips:

• Keep processing scaled; marathons punish bottlenecks harder
• Watch GPU load — Endless is where the ~100,000 fish fantasy stresses hardware

Zen (and the Windows screensaver)

Zen mode softens the experience into something closer to living art. The standout feature: you can install Zen as a real Windows screensaver, turning your lab into desktop ambience.

Zen is ideal when you:

• Want the visuals and music without sweaty optimization
• Leave the lab up as background motion
• Show Fish Lab to someone who likes cozy systems more than grind

You should still understand collection basics so the scene stays alive, but Zen forgives min-max anxiety. On non-Windows platforms, enjoy Zen in-game even if the screensaver install path is Windows-specific.

Modes versus progression systems

Grants, the 200+ tech tree, and tool power still matter in modes that expose them. Sandbox and Endless are poor places to ignore Grants and Tech Tree entirely if those systems are available — you will just reinvent bottlenecks. Zen may de-emphasize urgency without deleting the underlying toys; treat it as presentation-first.

Platform notes

Fish Lab runs on Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon), and Linux/SteamOS with Steam Cloud and full controller support. Screensaver installation is the Windows-flavored bonus on top of Zen. Cloud saves help if you bounce between a desktop for Endless and a quieter machine for Zen viewing — verify cloud sync after long sessions.

Community confusion that shows up in modes

Players sometimes hop into Sandbox to “fix” tanks, offline labs, or counters. Modes can make those UI questions louder because you stare at systems longer. Keep Tips and Tricks bookmarked. If a patch changes mode behavior, the Updates Hub is authoritative over older videos.
