Upgrades Priority Tier List

This upgrades priority tier list tells you what to buy when in Fish Lab’s oversized tech tree. It complements Grants and Tech Tree with ranked timing advice. Exact node names vary as you discover them; ranks refer to upgrade roles.

Ranking criteria

  1. Impact on on-beat collection reliability
  2. Impact on processing so money is not trapped
  3. Enabling strong tools (see Tools Tier List)
  4. Accelerating or empowering grants / big equipment
  5. Late swarm survivability and quality-of-life

Early game priority

S-tier early roles

  • Beat-window and collection forgiveness upgrades
  • First processing throughput nodes
  • Starter tool unlocks that multiply hover catch

A-tier early roles

  • Minor capacity bumps that prevent awkward stalls
  • Cheap quality-of-life that reduces menu friction
  • Economy nodes that shorten time-to-first-grant

C-tier early traps

  • Deep luxury branches with no loop impact
  • Over-specialized swarm tech while the screen is still sparse
  • Spending every coin on spectacle before processing is stable

Early mantra: stabilize Getting Started loop before greed.

Mid game priority

Mid game begins when tools matter and the first grant is visible.

S-tier mid roles

  • Tool efficiency for your active loadout
  • Processing scaled to rising catch
  • Grant-progress nodes that unlock big equipment on schedule

A-tier mid roles

  • Secondary collection assists
  • Balanced tree fills that keep multiple bottlenecks healthy
  • Power-related unlocks that make Power Allocation meaningful

B-tier mid roles

  • Mode-leaning upgrades you will appreciate more in Endless/Sandbox
  • Nice visual or lab-growth helpers that do not move income much

D-tier mid traps

  • Banking everything for a grant while the basic tree starves
  • Buying every new tool unlock immediately without power to feed them

Late game priority

Late game is swarm economics and cleanup.

S-tier late roles

  • Throughput and capacity that keep ~huge schools processable
  • Upgrades that protect performance-adjacent comfort if offered
  • Nodes that finish achievement-adjacent mastery goals without breaking the loop

A-tier late roles

  • Remaining grant chain equipment
  • Specialization for Endless marathons
  • Quality-of-life you deferred

B/C late

  • Completionist leftovers
  • Pure vanity once income is solved

Cross-check goals with Achievements & Rewards so Tenured, Surfaced, and friends are intentional rather than accidental.

Grants versus ordinary nodes

Grants are not “S-tier upgrades”; they are scheduled spikes. The S-tier behavior is preparing for them without freezing the tree. After a grant, immediately reassess: new equipment often promotes a tool from B to A or demotes an old favorite.

Sample buy order (role-based)

  1. Collection reliability
  2. Processing catch-up
  3. First real tool + efficiency
  4. Grant preparation without total starvation
  5. Post-grant tool rebalance tech
  6. Swarm-scale throughput
  7. Completionist and mode spice

When the list disagrees with a video

Videos (including walkthroughs linked from the Walkthrough page) may buy for entertainment. If your bottleneck differs, trust the bottleneck. Also trust Updates over pre-launch or demo-era commentary.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should I ever buy low-tier upgrades?

Yes for fun or after the loop is stable. Avoid them when you are stuck or saving for a grant bottleneck.

Do grants count as upgrades in this list?

Grants are separate spikes. The list ranks the prep and follow-up tech that makes grants pay off.

Is this list for Endless mode too?

Early/mid advice still applies. Late Endless favors throughput and swarm-scaling roles even harder.
